Hi, this is Danny and I'm going to be writing about one of my favorite San Francisco landmarks - Red's Java House. A classic dive right on the water (ha ha). A hot dog-burger-beer breakfast joint housed in an historic shack at the foot of Pier 30, on the edge of the bay and downtown and in the shadows of the Bay Bridge. I've read some folks' reviews where they are confused and say this is the Java House next to the ball park. No! Different. This is Red's. Many's the time over 20 years I would come here at lunch to get a double dog and a beer or two from the previous owner - he had red hair. I was there for the transition to the new ownership - no red hair. There were some seats and historic pictures inside, but I would mostly, except when it was raining, meander over and sit on the pier. It was as dirt cheap as you could get then in the City and maybe now a days it still is. The food isn't remarkable - let's be honest - I never thought much of the burgers - just stuck with the dogs and the beer. It's about waterfront dining on the cheap - enjoying the sun, fresh air, the water, the people, avoiding the pigeons, filling your stomach, drinking beer and watching the world go by on the Embarcadero and the Bay. I hear tell that they are now providing another SF icon - Anchor Steam and at only about $11 for a pitcher. Cheap grub and drink - not bad for waterfront dining and drinking and for sure certainly a good San Francisco experience. Since 1954.
